Think about what you have read so far in your nonfiction book. How do ideas there connect with something else you have read about, something you have experienced in your life, something that is occurring now in our world, or something that has occurred in the past in our world? You need to avoid "group think" when you post your comment. You all have had different life experiences, so you should be able to come up with your own original idea and not simply rehash the first commenter's thoughts. You must post at least one comment consisting of a well-organized paragraph or more. Use specific details to back up your opinion. You do not need to use direct quotations unless you choose to. Neither do you need to reply to others' comments, but feel free to do so. Due Wednesday, December 19 by the end of the day. If you're having trouble finding a way to begin, consider one of the following sentence starters:

In the book, cartographer August Petermann developed the theory of the Open Polar Sea. It stated that after entering a "portal" through the ice, there would be a vast sea to explore. The theory intrigued many minds and influenced the Jeanette's voyage. De long's crew set out to discover whether this theory was correct. In our current day, we face the issue of climate change. If the overall temperature of the planet continues to increase, polar ice caps will melt increasing ocean level. Also, this could make the Open Polar Sea theory true. If that were to happen, it would provide a whole new learning opportunity. The melting would cause natural changes to our planet, that we would have to learn how to deal with. Also, someone could potentially explore the entire North Pole.

The argument to explore the cold unknown of the arctic is similar to how we look at going into the unknown of space. During this time no one really knew about the north pole and there were only story about it. Only a cupple of ships have ever been sent up there and only a few have return. Know compare that to your knowledge of space we have only ever sent a cupple of ships to DEEP space and to other planets. We only have stories of what out there and what other planets have to offer. At the time people really wanted to know what it looked like and what it is like. So George got a sponsor and explored. This could sound like what were doing right now. People are really interested in space and rocket ships, therefore there are people willing to help make this happen. Just like George it wasn't to find a sponsor to pay for the trip. SpaceX has a lot of share holder that help pay for there mission because it what the people want to see.

This novel reminds me of the book, Hatchet. There are so many similarities between the books. In the book, Hatchet, a boy named Brian had to learn to deal with surviving on his own after the plane he was on crashed. He had to make his own shelter, food, and tools in order for him to survive. He learned how to make a fire, deal with wild animals such as a bear, a moose, and wolves. He even dealt with a tornado. Likewise in the novel, In the Kingdom of Ice, De Long and thirteen of his men were stranded in the middle of the frozen Arctic after they got shipwrecked by a pack of ice. Soon, they had to use their survival skills in harsh, unbearable conditions. The ice made it almost impossible to travel through. They had to eat shrimp, seals, bucks, and birds. They had to face polar bears, isolation, storms, sickness, starvation, and the extreme, frozen weather itself.

This book reminds me of a mix between Gilligan island and Christopher Columbus. In Gilligan island the skipper and Gilligan went out to take a crew on a two our tour vacation. But a storm hit and they unexpectedly ended up on a stranded island. In my mind i feel like De long would be more like the skipper because they are both captains. Gilligan and Bennett would be more alike to me because they are the right hand men. The fact that they both ended up getting stranded without a warning reminds me of the TV show. This book also reminds me of Christopher Columbus. Columbus and his men went on a voyage to intentionally go to India to get the silk they have to come back to England and trade for money. Instead they went the wrong way and ended up in america. Just like De long trying to set up a crew to go to the north pole and come back with seal leather for money but ends up getting stranded. I feel like the concepts are kinda the same on what both protagonist intentions are and there results.
