This book is a good example of a great adventure, and really show how much they struggled to stay alive in this new land. With "no large animal to hunt, no safe ports, no driftwood to burn---De Long could not hide his sense of regret"(Hampton Sides 223). The Author is really good at going in depth and explain how the crew feels. and there struggle throughout the journey. This Quot sums up the rest of there months on their boat(Until it sinks)hungry, afraid, and very cold. When reading this book Hampton, in great detail, gives describe the crew and how starvation and the cold has effected them. He goes on the explain that at there most desperate time and close to death they were force to eat there dogs. Showing that even thou the men that went on this mission where the best and strongest they struggled. This journey was terrible and hard but they learned so much for the science community.

The Jeanette crew had discovered a new island which they named Bennett. The discovery not only made the voyage successful, it served as a symbol of hope and comfort for the men. The island not only allowed the crew to recover, it reminded them of home. As the crew left their island, "De long looked fondly back one last time at his discovery, the island's summit 'towering up like a dome . . . swimming in the clouds.' As they proceeded south, threading between ice cakes, winter seemed to close in around them. 'Our beautiful island,' said Melville, 'was shrouded in white'"(Sides 286). The quote shows that the island became important to the crew. Bennett island brought a sense of familiarity unlike the unknown expanse of ice. It made me feel like the crew still had hope. The author did a good job at make this part stand out.

It has been four days since the men have been traveling the ice land on foot. Marching and marching hoping that they will be in sight of some land. While walking the team had found a hut from a native. No doubt the men took advantage of this god sent blessing. Now they can rest and try to get warm. Erichsen noticed that his foot was swollen and purple. He had caught frostbite in a very bad condition. Dr Ambler needed to act fast and the only resolution was disgusting and critical."Ambler, who in a second procedure had amputated a few more of Erichsen's toes, now believed both feet might have to be sawn off entirely. Noting that his patient was suffering from lockjaw, Ambler hypothesized that a massive fever might intervene and carry him off"(Slides 333). Slides went deep in giving this painful experience of a worse matter scenario. Right now the struggle is real and even though it is a novel I felt bad for Erichsen for what he is going through.Just thinking of his mentality on what is happening. Slides is giving this material to show the reader what can happen on an terrifying adventure. The men are now all thriving for survival and this quote is at the peak of a man before death.

My favorite quote in the novel In the Kingdom of Ice is when De Long had to make a very difficult decision. One of the men was suffering from lockjaw and had his toes amputated due to frostbite. If De Long kept moving on with his men, then it would shorten the life of Erichsen, the man who was very weak and ill. If De Long and his crew remained in the hut, it would lengthen Erichsen's life a little longer but the rest of the crew would risk dying due to starvation. "'This is a crisis in our lives' said De Long. In the end, De Long went with his better instincts: No man would be left behind. Erichsen would be dragged along, no matter the hardship" (Sides 334). This is exactly what they did. This quote exemplifies what the entire story portrays, which is teamwork and helping one another. None of the crew, on this difficult and dangerous journey to the North Pole, would have survived as long as they did, if it wasn't for their tireless attempt to help each other care for and work together. They all pulled their strengths and depended on each other for survival. All throughout the book, just as in this quote, the sense of all for one and one for all is evident. It is very touching how each member of the crew looked after one another and acted as a family unit.
