In the book In the Garden of Beasts, the Author is able to show the evolution of a semi-stable country to one bent on world domination. The way the Author was able to do this was by following the Dodds family as they go to Germany as U.S ambassadors which also allowed the Authors to be able to show some of the politics around Hitler's rise to power. The book is able to basically rap up Hitler's rise to power and the corruption of the officials under him in the quote "They know in Germany they can do as they will. They feel that their power within the country and are to that extent drunk with it" on page 136. This quote shows how the Nazi officials saw the power that they had and they where "drunk" with it in being able to do whatever they want. This quote is also supported many times when Dodd gets reports of Americans being attacked and beaten but the police and government do not do anything about it.

The book In the Garden of Beasts has a lot of circumstances that can relate to present day, or to an individual in this time. Mildred and Fallada were strolling along the shore of Lake Michigan. They were discussing differences between America and Germany, Fallada said she could never live in any other country except Germany, to which Mildred replied, “Perhaps, Herr Ditzen, it is less important where one lives than how one lives.” (pg. 271). This quote relates to a lot of the book and to reality now, due to the amount of hate passed around. Regardless of where one lives, they can still be hated on due to the way they live. This quote really sticks with me, as I can also apply it to my life.
